Visiting the market in any town or city is a great way to get to know the place and people plus you’ll usually find the best food. The Old Town Market in Puerto Vallarta is no exception. This market is mainly used by locals – Mexican and expats alike.
Old Town or the Romantic Zone is the area south of the River Cuale and is a well-placed neighborhood with lots of bars, restaurants, the beach, and hotel or AirBnB options.
If you are planning on cooking some of your own meals like we do, at the market, you’ll find most of the products you’ll need to whip something up including meat, tortillas, fresh fruit and vegetables, and amazing cheese from El Tuito.
The market is easy to find located at Lázaro Cárdenas 564-C, we initially found this gem by taking a cooking class at Gaby’s restaurant and not only did we learn how to make a plethora of salsas, ceviche, mole, and chile rellenos we also went on a tour of the Old Town AKA Zona Romantica market, where we watched tortillas being made in a tortilleria, found the freshest produce and along the way learned about Gaby’s family and the history of Puerto Vallarta.
We were lucky enough to do the market portion of the cooking class twice! First with Gaby, the owner and restaurants namesake and then a few days later with head Chef Julio Cesar, Gaby’s brother.
